What to Look for in a Local Funeral Home

Published: December 27, 2022

It is important to know what to look for in a funeral home or cremation provider, whether you are planning ahead for cremation and funeral services or are wanting to become more familiar with your options in New Bedford. Here at Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, we are committed to providing compassionate care for our families.

Whether you choose cremation or a traditional burial, we are here for you with experienced, professional funeral directors, expertise in local resources for personalizing services, and an array of affordable options. We believe you should look for those qualities in any local funeral home, and we encourage you to reach out to us if you have questions.

Why Local Ownership Matters

Larger corporations and private equity firms are gradually taking over family-owned funeral homes when owners retire and there is no line of succession. Funeral homes and crematories that are owned by larger corporations or private equity firms may lose their local connection. With outside ownership, profit can become more important than serving the community. With family-owned funeral homes, the community and its people come first because the funeral director and those on the staff are genuine neighbors. We care about our community and the local families who live nearby.

Honest, Open and Affordable Pricing

Funerals are custom events, much like a wedding, where the family can choose the services it wants to include. Because of this, many funeral homes don’t offer packages, but rather an a la carte list of services, including everything from transportation and embalming to visitation and funeral services—or a simple graveside ceremony. While we also provide custom personalization of cremation and funeral services, we have found that package pricing simplifies your choices.

Currently, funeral homes must provide a General Price List upon request. Because we believe in honest, open and affordable pricing for cremation and funeral services, we publish our New Day General Price List in its entirety on our website. It shows how much each service of a certified funeral director costs, and it is helpful to families as they plan for a personalized funeral service. See the General Price List here.

In addition to publishing our General Price List online, we understand our community’s need for budget-friendly service options. We developed package pricing to help you plan for quality cremation and funeral services. Package pricing also makes decisionmaking easier for many families who struggle with emotions when a loved one dies without plans in place.

New Day Cremation and Funeral Care cremation and burial packages reflect New Bedford’s most-requested services, such as Simple Cremation with Memorial Service. New Day offers six packages — three for cremation and three for burial services. Each package clearly defines the all-inclusive price and what is included in the package. Families may choose these packages at the time of need or when they plan in advance.

Personalization and Local Service Coordination

A funeral or memorial service can and should include personal touches to make it special for those who attend. The most meaningful services often include moving music, a celebrant to eulogize the individual, a video tribute or other visual display, and flowers or greenery. Local funeral directors have connections to trusted celebrants and clergy, musicians, flower shops, printers, and other providers who can make a funeral or memorial service special and reflective of the person who died. In addition, the funeral director takes on the responsibility of helping families gather the required information for the death certificate, report the death to Social Security, and write and submit the obituary, among other tasks.

Meet the Staff

When you are looking to pre-plan your final arrangements or those for another individual (e.g. an ailing family member), we encourage you to meet with the staff of nearby local funeral homes and tour their facilities. Make an appointment to see their facility and take the time to ask them any questions you have about pre-planning for cremation and a memorial service or burial and a funeral. They should be open to providing answers and information about how they approach personalization of services.

When you are ready to pre-plan, Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care would be happy to talk to you about your options. Please contact us for a personal appointment.
