Arthur C. Heffernan, 82 of New Bedford died Saturday, July 22, 2023 peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Helen Anne Heffernan (Reed).&

Born in New Bedford, son of the late William and Eugenie ( Genereux) Heffernan, he was a lifelong resident of the south end. A career educator, Arthur taught for 37 years at Roosevelt Jr High and New Bedford High School. A devoted basketball coach at Roosevelt, he led the team to win the City Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996. He proudly served in the US Coast Guard and the New Bedford Parks and Recreation Board. Survivors include, son, William Heffernan and Michael Heffernan of New Bedford; daughter, Sloane Parent and her husband Mark of North Carolina; grandchildren Reed, Cole, and Quinn Parent; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Calling Hours for Mr. Heffernan will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023 from 4-7pm in the Donaghy-New Day Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 9am from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass with Military Honors at 10am in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 233 County Street, New Bedford. Burial will be private at the request of the family. In honor of his love for the Boston Red Sox, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the Jimmy Fund.
