Obituary

Barbara (Shepard) Christian, 77, of Fairhaven, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Alden Court Nursing Care after a brief illness.

She was born in Fall River; daughter of the late William and Florence (Sherry) Shepard. Barbara spent most of her childhood in Swansea, where her early years were shaped by the close-knit community and coastal surroundings that would remain dear to her throughout her life.

Barbara pursued higher education at Colby-Sawyer College and later at the University of Denver. Her professional life was marked by a deep commitment to early childhood education. For over 30 years, she served as a dedicated preschool teacher and director, nurturing young minds with patience and care. After retiring from teaching, she continued to serve others as a Patient Coordinator for the Marion Institute. Her passion for holistic and biological medicine guided much of her work and personal interests.

A woman of many joys, Barbara found peace and inspiration in nature. She loved flowers and gardening, often tending to her plants with the same devotion she gave to those around her. She enjoyed staying active through sports and especially cherished practicing yoga. The ocean held a special place in her heart—being near the water brought her comfort and joy.

In retirement, Barbara treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Her days were filled with laughter, stories, and shared moments that created lasting memories for those closest to her.

Survived by her daughter Sarah (Christian) Westgate and husband Kristopher of Fairhaven; her grandchildren Ellie and Austin Westgate; her sister Dale Sullivan and husband Kevin of Little Compton, Rhode Island; her sister-in-law Gail Shepard of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; nephews Seamus Sullivan and his wife Caroline, Liam Sullivan of Bristol, Rhode Island, and Tucker Shepard and his wife Adie of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Barbara also leaves behind many other family members and friends whom she adored.

She was predeceased by her brother William Sandy Shepard.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Alden Court Nursing Care for their exceptional care and compassion during Barbara's final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara's memory to Wounded Warriors https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/ or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/ - two causes that held special meaning for her.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
