Obituary

NEW BEDFORD-Daniel S. Gilbarg, 78, of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, May 14th, 2025 from complications from Parkinsons Disease.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Dan was the son of David Gilbarg and Shirley (Deskin) Gilbarg, and lived in New Bedford since 1974.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marlene Pollock.  Their two sons, Ben and Eric and their wives, Melissa and Alesha, and their grandchildren Alexis Rose, Daezhon, Ry-L, Cire, Ahrryus, and Nevaeh Brewster, and great-grandchild Pharoah.

Dan was a graduate of Harvard University where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts and a Master's in Education.  He graduated from Northeastern University with a Ph.D in Sociology.  Dan was a beloved professor at Bristol Community, where he taught for 50 years, inspiring many to go into social justice fields.

Dan also was the inspirational leader and co-founder of the Coalition for Social Justice.  Formed in 1995, CSJ has been a leader in state-wide legislation to raise up the needs of struggling working families over the last 30 years.  Dan's enduring commitment to justice and fairness motivated him and led him to inspire many young people to join the many campaigns that he was involved in.

A Celebration of Daniel's Life will be held Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 2-5PM at the First Unitarian Church, 71 Eighth Street, New Bedford.
