NEW BEDFORD - Daniel J. Mello, 74, of New Bedford passed away unexpectedly, after a period of declining health, Friday, January 17, 2025, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of 37 years to Alga (Ponte) Mello.

Born and raised in Fall River, the son of the late Manuel Mello and Teresa (Mulrooney) Llorens, he graduated from BMC Durfee High School and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Dan was a recipient of the Purple Heart and was very proud of serving his country and being a veteran. Dan settled in New Bedford over 35 years ago.

He was a member of several Veterans organizations, the VFW and American Legion, the New Bedford Moose Lodge and enjoyed fishing and playing softball in his youth. Avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

He is survived by his wife Alga and her children, Karleen Beaulieu and the late Robert and George Souza; He is survived by his son, Daniel Mello and his wife Laurea and their daughter, Danielle; Daniel was the brother of the late Margaret McMullen and is also survived by her husband Raymond McMullen of FL.

Calling hours are Thursday from 5-7PM in the Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, 465 County Street, New Bedford. His funeral will process from the funeral home at 12PM Friday, January 24, 2025, with a graveside service at 1:30PM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
