Obituary

NEW BEDFORD-Debra Marcondes, 75, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital on Monday August 10th 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born December 19, 1950, in New Bedford, Debra was the daughter of the late Marie-Ann (Dupuis) and Frederick Gryss. She was the beloved wife of Michael Marcondes, to whom she was married for nearly thirty years.

She is survived by her husband, Michael, and her three sons; Shawn Jacobsen and his wife, Christina, of Lynn; Scott Jacobsen and his wife, Linda, of New Bedford; Corey Jacobsen and his wife, Cheri, of New Bedford; and her brother, Michael Gryss of New Bedford; her sister Maria Costa, of Fredericksburg, VA; her grandchildren, Sydney, Brady, Jonathan, Alexander, Liam, Jade and Katie; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved children, Christopher and Amber, and by her sister and best friend, Kathleen (KT) Nicholas.

Debra attended New Bedford Voc-Tech and later Kinyon-Campbell Business School, where she studied business technology. She put her education to use at several places but none more important to her than New Directions, where she worked tirelessly making sure the people of the south coast were retrained and ready for the jobs of the future. She truly enjoyed her job, the people she worked with, and the opportunity to help others gain the skills and confidence with technology.

Family and friends were at the center of Debra’s life. She was a funny, caring, and incredibly strong woman who, despite the losses she experienced, remained devoted to the people she loved. She especially loved having family and friends gathered at her home, where there was always a place for one more person.

Debra had a deep faith and a strong love of Jesus. She was a devout member of St. Gabriel’s Church in New Bedford, and her faith provided her with comfort and strength throughout her life.

Debra had a passion for home décor and loved watching HGTV, often finding inspiration in creating a beautiful and welcoming home. She especially loved Christmas and decorating for the holidays. She enjoyed family trips to Mary’s Pond when her children were little and treasured the simple moments spent together. Lunch with the girls and their days out together were another source of happiness and laughter.

Those who knew Debra will remember her for her humor, caring nature, strength, faith, and unwavering love for her family. She had a gift for bringing people

together and making her home a place where family and friends felt welcome. Debra will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Debra’s memory to Boston Children’s Hospital.
