Elizabeth
Gibbs
December 5, 2025
NEW BEDFORD- Elizabeth Gibbs, 89, passed away peacefully at her home on December 5, 2025 after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family and friends as prayers rang out to the Heavens. She was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence W. Gibbs for 64 beautiful years.
Born in New Bedford Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late John and Marjorie (Babineau) Halpin. A resident of New Bedford most of her life, Elizabeth was an incredible homemaker, baker, cook, nurse, gardener, avid bird-watcher, mother and friend. A woman of deep faith, Elizabeth was a very spiritual person and her faith was an integral part of her life.
Family and especially her grandchildren, great and great- great grandchildren were the center of Elizabeth's life. Some of her fondest memories came from the large gatherings where the house overflowed with family, joy, warmth and laughter. Her home was a place of comfort and heartfelt welcome.
Though Elizabeth's passing leaves an ache in the hearts of those she loved, her kindness and unwavering love will continue to guide her family. Her legacy lives on in our hearts.
She is survived by her sister, Susan Jochim; son, John Steven Gibbs, his wife Susan and their children Laurie, Ashley, Jonathan and Zoey; her daughter, Susan (Gibbs) Swisher wife of the late Mark Swisher and her children Elizabeth, Stephen and Jessica; her grandson, Justin whom Elizabeth and her late husband raised as their own son; son, Patrick Gibbs and children Cameron and Collin; her great-grandchildren, David St. Pierre and Emelia Fairclough; a great-great granddaughter, Caroline St. Pierre; and her loving caregiver and special friend, Debi Taft.
A special thank you to the Reverend Scott Ciosek and Reverend Faith Mbuthia of St. Peter's Episcopal church for their spiritual guidance in Elizabeth's final days. Thank you to Southcoast VNA Hospice nurses and support staff for their care.
At Elizabeth's request there will be no visitation and funeral services will be private.
