NEW BEDFORD-Erma A. (Thornton) Dewhurst, 80, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 peacefully at home surrounded by family after a brief illness.& She was the wife of late John G. Dewhurst.

Born in New Bedford, daughter of late Gray L. Thornton and May (Baker) Thornton, Erma was a life long resident of the city and attended New Bedford High School.

She was a dedicated mother and housewife who enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, watching wildlife, puzzle building and having good conversations with friends and family.

Survivors include her twosons, Richard Dewhurst and his wife Donna of Columbia, NC and John Dewhurst and his wife Merrill of Fall River MA; fourgrandchildren, six great grandchildren, a niece, Corrina Richard of New Bedford and a cousin, Sheila Botelho of Rochester, MA.

Erma was the sister to the late Joyce (Thornton) Fonseca.

In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and private arrangements are by the Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, 465 County St., New Bedford.
