Frederick
Gryss
December 3, 2023
NEW BEDFORD-Frederick Joseph Gryss, 93, of New Bedford, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023 of natural causes. He was the husband of the late Marie-Anne Gryss (nee Dupuis).
Born in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Waleria (née Niekowal) Gryss. He was a proud 1949 graduate of New Bedford High School where he played basketball and baseball wearing his lucky number 13. Freddy, as he was known by those close to him, was an avid sports enthusiast and devoted New York Yankees and Miami Dolphins fan.
After high school, Freddy enlisted in the United States Army. He traveled the Pacific and served on the ground during the Korean War. Among his endeavors, he held a unique role within the community, where his keen understanding of odds and probabilities earned him a place as a prominent local figure in the world of sports betting and entertainment. Up until his final days he could recite the rosters of many professional and local teams, players averages, and of course, the points spread.
For years, Freddy worked serving customers at watering holes in New Bedford that included the Poirier Post, Continental Tavern, and the Castaway Lounge. He frequently organized social trips to Florida, Fenway Park, New York City, and Raynham Park. Freddy was known for a heavy pour, good conversation, and lasting friendship.
Freddy is survived by his children, Debra Marcondes and her husband Michael and Michael Gryss, his grandchildren Shawn, Scott, Corey, Ryan, Erin, Katie, Eric, and Michael Jr. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Kathleen (KT) Nichols (nee Gryss) and grandfather to the late Christopher Jacobsen and Amber Jacobsen.
Many thanks go out to the staff at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home in New Bedford for their exceptional care of Freddy in his last weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations in Freddy's memory can be made to the Veterans' Transition House in New Bedford, MA.
