John W. Donaghy, III, 95 of New Bedford passed away Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Royal of Fairhaven surrounded by loved ones.& He was the husband of the late Nila (Avery) Donaghy and former husband of the late Millicent (Boardman) Donaghy.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, son of the late John W. Donaghy, Jr. And Margaret (Lindsay) Donaghy, he was educated in New Bedford and Dighton and later lived in Freetown and Taunton returning to New Bedford in 2008.
John served in the U.S. Navy as a cook during WWII on numerous vessels. He had worked at Stillwater Assoc. in Freetown for 20 years and retired from the maintenance department of Apponequit High School. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge Star in the East AF & AM, the VFW Post 6643 in East Freetown and served as a Volunteer Firefighter in Freetown for many years.
He is survived by a son, William L. Donaghy and his fiancé Janet MacNally of Bourne; two daughters, Nancy Foster and her husband Albert of East Freetown and Kathleen Maskel and her husband James of Watertown; four step daughters, Joanna Soares of New Bedford, Laura Smith and her spouse Elizabeth Tuura of Orlando, FL, Melinda Ward and her husband Robert of Newark, Delaware and Nila Fowler and her husband Steven of East Taunton; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Calling hours are Thursday from 6-8pm in the Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, 465 County St., New Bedford. His funeral service will be Friday, August 27, 2021 at 10AM in the funeral home followed by interment with military honors in Cedar Knoll Cemetery in East Taunton.
