New Bedford - John Gomes, 74, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025.

He was born in New Bedford to the late Julio Sr. and Elizabeth (Baptista) Gomes. Growing up, John worked in the cranberry bogs. He was the Mr. Peanut Mascot for the Mr. Peanut store in Downtown New Bedford; he'd wave at people and pass out peanuts.

John loved to play golf. He would collect golf balls and sell them. He loved listening to music and Stevie Wonder was his favorite. If you needed a good laugh, John loved to crack jokes. Making people smile was one of his specialties. Above all else, he was a loyal servant of God. John loved God and had his faith. He always read his bible until he couldn't any longer due to his health. He felt comfort with the Bible near him. He was a member of the International Church of Nazarene.

He is survived by his sisters Linda Paige of Providence, RI, Tonnette Neves of New Bedford, Lisa L. Medina of New Bedford, Renee Centeio of New Bedford, and Ericka Gomes of Providence, RI; his uncles in New Bedford; his aunt in North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Julio Gomes Jr, Raymond Gomes, Leonard Gomes; his sisters Benvinda Rousseau-Gomes, Nadine D. Gomes, and Avis Monique Gomes.

Arrangements are under the care of Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, New Bedford, MA. His service will be held on Saturday, October 11th at 11am at the International Church of the Nazarene located at 286 Pleasant Street, New Bedford, MA.
