Jose Maurilio Teixeira Sr.

ACUSHNET - Jose Maurlio Teixeira Sr., of Acush-net, age 91, passed away on July 13, 2024, at Tobey Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Louise B. (Galas - Halle) Teixeira (2024). He was predeceased by his former wife, Lillian). (Donth) Teixeira (2017), was the son of the late Jose E. Teix-eira and the late Olympia Henriquetta Teixeira, and the stepson of the late Laurinda Teixeira.

Born in Bom Sucesso, Funchal, Madeira, Jose was proud to be an American citizen, living the American dream. He arrived in the United States at the age of 16 and served his country in the National

Guard at Fort Bragg, where he achieved the rank of Gunnery Sergeant E8.

Jose was a successful entrepreneur, owning several businesses, including the Continental Tavern, which he operated until 2014. He also owned Tex's Barbershop, Lund's Corner Barbershop, Gene's Café, the Castaways Lounge (Circus Lounge), and the Cedar St. Lounge.

His easygoing nature and love for his Madeiran heritage earned him recognition and support within the Madeiran and Portuguese communities.

Early on, he rose through the ranks at Club Sporte Madeirense, serving as manager and later as president multiple times. He became a 'festeiro' (feast member) of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, and after joining the sponsor organization, the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, Inc., he rose to the rank of president, serving from 1966, 1973-1980, and 1985-1994 His vision and leadership significantly shaped the Madeira Field grounds.

Jose also served as a delegate to the International Communities of Madeira.

He is survived by his son, Jose Maurilio Teixeira, Jr. of New Bedford; his brother Paul D. Teixeira and his wife Jennifer of New Bedford; his stepsons Kevin Halle and his wife Alycia of Acushnet, and Gregory Halle and his wife Kelly of Fort Myers, FL; his grandchildren Sydney, Courtney, Connor, and Savanna; and several nieces and nephews in the United States and Madeira.

He was predeceased by his sisters Teresa (Teixeira) Machado of Madeira, Arminda (Teixeira) Marques, and Charlotte N. (Teixeira) Pauline, and brothers Miguel J. Teixeira and Laurenco D. Teixeira.

Jose loved his country, politics, and his beloved dog Tyson.

Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Donaghy Funeral Home, located at 465 County St., New Bed-ford, MA. There will be a Catholic Mass on Thursday, August 8th, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception located at 136 Earle Street, New Bedford.

He will be interred at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 1:45 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Club Sport Madeirense located at 1626 Acushnet Ave, New Bedford immediately following the interment. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portuguese Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, Club Medeirense S.S. Sacramento Charitable Foundation, Inc. in memory of Jose M Teixeira Sr.
