Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Linda M. MacKenzie of New Bedford.  Linda died on October 19, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief but mighty battle with cancer.

Linda leaves behind her sister-friend Jacqueline Bragga (George), her niece Heather MacKenzie (Scot), her god-child Isabella Kowal and the Kowal family.  While Linda never had children of her own, she was Auntie Linda to many of her friends' children.

Linda is predeceased by her father G. Martin MacKenzie and mother Helen M. MacKenzie (Adshead).

Linda spent her young life in New Bedford with her brother Bruce.  She attended New Bedford High School, and chose a career in nursing, attending Diman Regional School of Practical Nursing and UMass Dartmouth. Linda worked at St. Luke's Hospital for 41 years, retiring in 2018. Linda was a member at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Linda was equal parts stubborn and generous, independent and kind. She loved spending time with her chosen people and her animals, playing golf, bowling and could often be persuaded to sing Queen songs at the top of her lungs.  Her epic holiday parties will always be remembered, as will her love for New England sports teams.  Linda did not like having her picture taken, shoes that weren't flip flops, and anything with an avocado.

In her retirement, Linda cared for her pets Daario and Max and volunteered at the Fairhaven Animal Shelter.  She loved theatre nights at The Zeiterion, and weekly trivia with friends.  And friends she had in the dozens!  Friends quickly became Team Linda during her illness and supported her with visits, meals, transportation, texts, and prayers.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke's Crapo Unit and Southcoast Hospice for the amazing care provided in Linda's last few weeks of life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Monday, October 30, 2023 from 4-7pm in the Donaghy-New Day Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford.

Burial services will be held privately at the Rural Cemetery, New Bedford.

Memorial donations in Linda's name may be made to Southcoast Hospice and the Fairhaven Animal Shelter.
