Obituary

Linus W. Eldridge, Sr., 87, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021, peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford after a brief illness.


He was born in New Bedford, the son of the late William D. Eldridge and Doris (Caswell) Eldridge formerly of Fairhaven, where he was raise and graduated from Fairhaven High School. He played coronet in a local Jazz/Dixieland band.& Linus entered the U.S. Coast Guard after high school and served until discharged in 1961. He then went to work as a local fish buyer for the family business of L.S. Eldridge and Sons out of New Bedford. When the business was sold, most of his family moved to Milton, NH where he also resided for many years. He moved back to New Bedford in 2006 and resided at the Carriage House Apartments.


He became involved in the International Church of the Nazarene in New Bedford and became a Born Again Christian. He attended church and bible study until his health began to decline. He was also an avid Red Sox fan and never missed watching them.


He was formerly married to the late Pauline (LeLievre) Rose, who was the mother of William. He is survived by his son, William D. Eldridge and his wife Elaine of Acushnet. He was formerly married to Mary, who is the mother of his daughter, Samantha and was predeceased by his son, Linus W. Eldridge, Jr. He was also the grandfather to Andrew Eldridge and his wife Liz of Somerville, Lyndsay May Eldridge of Watertown and her companion Barry Carias, and Linus W. Eldridge, III of New Bedford; He was also the proud great grandfather of Anderson and Halle May Eldridge of Somerville, who he adored; also survived by several nieces and nephews in New Hampshire.


He loved getting pictures in the mail that Liz would send, of the children and their cat, Ash, that he would display throughout his apartment, along with their drawings.


Linus was the brother of the late Eleanor Shurtleff and Marilyn Heywood; and brother in law to George Shurtleff and Alden Heywood. He loved his family dearly.


In accordance with his wishes he was cremated. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11am in Pine Island Cemetery at 65 Marion Rd., Rte. 6 in Mattapoisett, across from On the Go.
