Obituary

NEW BEDFORD-Manuel A. Calvao, 73, of New Bedford passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at St. Luke's Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Gail L. (Whitehead) Calvao. They had been a couple since 1974.

Born in Chaves, Portugal, son of the late Ilidio and Altina (Amorim) Calvao, he came here when he was 10 years old. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and worked at the Acushnet Company for 20 years prior to becoming an over the road truck driver for J. Anthony Express until his retirement due to disability. Manny enjoyed his trips to the casino in his spare time.

He is survived by his loving wife Gail;  and beloved son, Matthew J. Calvao of Dartmouth and grandsons, Jason and Jonathan Calvao;  his mother-in-law, Alice Frates;  his siblings, Ana Camara and her husband Kenneth, Ceu Pereira and her husband Luis, Nina Calvao and Paul Calvao and his wife Anne all of New Bedford and John Calvao and his wife Nancy of VA;  nieces and nephews, Lisa Camara, Kieth Camara, Amorim Johnson, Aaron Calvao, Evan Calvao and several great nieces and nephews and his Godchild, Lexi Plante.  Manny was the father of the beloved late Jason M. Calvao.

Calling hours are Monday, March 2, 2026 from 3-6PM in the Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, 465 County Street, New Bedford.  Cremation will follow and burial in Pine Grove Cemetery will be at a later date.  for facility directions and memorial register please visit, www.newdayfunerals.com.
