NEW BEDFORD - Matilda "Tillie" M. (Mello) Lopes, 79, of New Bedford passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.  She was the wife of the late Anthony E. Lopes.

Born in New Bedford, Tillie was the daughter of the late Matilda (Freitas) Garcia and step daughter of the late Benjamin Garcia. She was a lifelong resident of the area.  Tillie worked & retired from the deli at Stop & Shop in the south end of New Bedford. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch or going for a drive down by the beach. You could often find her sitting at her dining room table texting her loved ones good morning & good night, watching & playing games on her iPad, or scratching her lottery tickets. She also loved crocheting blankets and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her 5 daughters, Donna Lopes of Arizona, Linda Lopes, Cheryl Lopes, Michelle Lopes-Platt and Valerie Lopes all of New Bedford; 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; survived by eight siblings, Tony, Joe, Alan, Dennis, Richie, Brenda, Joyce, Richie and the late Mickey, Joanna, Rose & Mary. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Monday, September 9, 2024 at 9:30AM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.  Arrangements are by the Donaghy New Day Cremation and Funeral Care, 465 County Street, New Bedford.  For memorial register please visit, www.newdayfunerals.com .
