PLYMOUTH-Robert Bates Allen, 95, formerly of Peterborough, NH, died on June 28, 2023. &He was born in Worcester, MA on October 8, 1927. His parents were the late Judge and Mrs. Walter D. Allen. He attended schools in Worcester and was a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he received his mechanical engineering degree. In 1956 he married the former Janice Kilgore, also of Worcester. They made their home in Dublin, NH and Peterborough.
His professional career included time at Hamilton Foundry and Machine Co. (Hamilton, Ohio), Savage Arms Corp. (Chicopee Falls, MA), and Worcester Pressed Steel (Worcester, MA). He was also VP of Engineering at New Hampshire Ball Bearings, VP and General Manager at Dynergy Corp. (Laconia, NH), Engineering Manager at BTU Engineering (Billerica, MA), and VP of Engineering at Austin Gordon Design, Corp. (Nashua, NH).
A 72-year member of the Masons, Mr. Allen was a member of the Athelstan Lodge for 50 years. He was a member of AF&AM (Worcester, MA), on the Board of Governors of the 32 Degree Masonic Learning Centers for Children, Inc. (Nashua, NH), and a member of the Altemont Lodge #26 AF&AM (Peterborough, NH), as well as a member of the Peterborough Lions Club for many years.
He was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough and served as Deacon and President of the Men's Club there. He also served as President of the Keene & Area Industrial Management Club and Selectman and member of the planning board of Dublin.
Mr. Allen was an avid trading card collector who enjoyed hunting and fishing in his early years. He discovered a love for oil painting after his retirement and took painting courses at the Sharon Arts Center, where he volunteered for several years.
He was predeceased by Janice Allen, his wife of 62 years, and his brother Walter D. Allen, Jr. (and his wife, Barbara). He is survived by his daughters, Laura B. Allen and Jennifer A. Bungert (and her husband, Daniel), his grandchildren, Emily J. Bungert and Benjamin A. Bungert, and several nieces and nephews.
