Obituary

ROBERT GOULD (Bob) YOUNG, 78, of County Street passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

He was born in New Bedford, MA, the son of the late Enid May (Gould) Nash and Robert Kimball Young.

Bob attended schools and colleges in New Bedford, and Springfield MA. He was highly educated and a proud member of MENSA.& He was a self-employed writer, and a published author. At the time of his death, he was working on the next edition of his life's work, The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Film, by R.G. Young; a 1,016 page collegiate reference book, first published in 2000.

Bob loved to scare his little brothers and sisters, back in the day, with movies like Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dragula, Phantom of the Opera, just to name a few. After watching a movie, he'd hide in the closet, call for us, then when we got there, he'd open the door and make it look like someone or something was pulling him back in. We'd go running and screaming in terror, but then he'd come out and get us and we'd laugh and tell him to do it again…and again…and again.

In November of 2011, Bob was able to make a trip across the Pond, to visit France with his brothers Jeremiah (Jay), and George and George's wife, Cheryle.

Back in the 80's, he was able to travel and tour the UK with his late partner, Fred. Unfortunately, life was never the same for Bob after Fred passed away.

Bob had a very dry sense of humor and loved to tell stories of real, as well as fictional family members, like the one about our aunt from Spain who was the high pitched background "woooooo" singer in scary movies, or the one about our great-great grandmother, who was a Mic Mac Indian and had four sets of teeth….One story Bob liked to tell was about his nephew, Justin. He nicknamed Justin "Charlie" because before Justin was born, Bob had a dream that Justin was born an Orangutan named Charlie, whose arms were so long that they dragged on the ground. He wanted us to "picture it in our mind's eye…".

Bob loved to send and receive letters. His long time friend and pen pal was Arlene Jigarjian. They exchanged letters, at least once a month, for years.

Every Christmas, no matter what, Uncle Bob would send a box of toys and (mostly) classic movie DVDs. Many times, he'd throw a couple of kitschy ones in there too, like the 1950's "Sex Do's & Don't's".

Besides his parents, Enid and Robert, Bob was predeceased by his partner of many years, Fred Balderston.

Bob is survived by and will be greatly missed by his siblings, Cathy H. Burley and her husband Wendell of LaBelle, FL; George C. Nash and his wife Cheryle of Temple, GA; Tracey Y. Bellville and her husband Brad of Greenfield, MA and Jeremiah J. (Jay) Nash and his partner Arlene Jigarjian of Turners Falls.

He will also be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews: Justin Nash, Candace Ragoza, Carlie Bellville, Kenneth Burley, Callie Burley, Faith & Christian Burley, and Anthony Longo.

Bob also had great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved very much: Emmalyn, Ben, Macy, Asher, Lennox & Emerson.

A special thank you to our cousins, Marjorie (Meg) and Eric (Ricky) Blaha, who also lived in New Bedford, and kept an eye on Bob for many years. Their time and effort in Bob's life is greatly appreciated. And to Larry Sylvia and the staff at Donaghy New Day Funeral Home, for their patience and kindness during this very difficult and confusing time.
