April 13, 1928 - June 9, 2024

SOUTH DARTMOUTH-Ruth (Dennis) Cassell, of Charlotte, North Carolina and South Dartmouth, MA, died peacefully early Sunday, June 9th at the age of 96. Her strength continued to amaze caretakers until her last day.

She was born on April 13, 1928 in Henderson, NC to Henry A. and Essie D. Dennis. After two years at the University of Mary Washington, she transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study journalism and became a lifelong Tarheel. At UNC, she met and then married fellow student Lewis Dean Cassell. Over their 69 years together,

they lived in RI, FL, OH, NC, SC, and MA and traveled the world. Ruth had an incredible eye for antiques, filling her home with beautiful, meaningful furniture and objects from around the globe. Always with quick wit and full of pep, she loved having red geraniums and peach ice cream in the summer; decorating for holidays in the fall, winter, and spring; and savoring chocolate, solving crossword puzzles, and reading mysteries all year round.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Dean Cassell; her brother, William Baker Dennis; and her sister, Doris Dennis Slayton. She is survived by her two sons, Dean D. Cassell and Timothy A. Cassell; daughter-in-law, Alma M. Cummings; and grandchildren, Isabella C. Cassell and James P.C. Cassell, who will always be grateful for Granny's generosity and love.
