Obituary

Steven Douglas Williams, 71, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on September 26,2026.

Steven was born on December 19, 1954, in Pavo, Georgia, the son of the late George and Lealer Williams. In 1973, he moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he would make his home, build his family, and spend the remainder of his life.

Steven shared his life with his lifelong partner, Alexis “Trudy” Correia of New Bedford.

Steven was a hardworking man who spent many years working as a roofer and in construction. After retiring from that work, he continued serving his community as a Meals on Wheels driver for Coastline Elderly Services. Even in retirement, Steven enjoyed staying busy and helping others.

Outside of work, Steven found happiness in the simple things. He loved driving around listening to music, and he took great pride in keeping his car clean and detailed. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and had a special love for cooking—especially firing up the grill and bringing everyone together for cookouts, whether they were held in the backyard or at the beach.

Steven was also known for always being a sharp dresser and for his witty sense of humor. He had a way of making those around him laugh and leaves behind countless memories that his family and friends will continue to share for years to come.

Steven leaves behind his lifelong partner, Alexis “Trudy” Correia of New Bedford, and his sons, Leon Correia and Jeffrey Correia, both of New Bedford whom he loved deeply.

He is lovingly remembered by his two granddaughters, Sha’kyla Correia-Platt of Lakeville and Àiyana Correia of Martha’s Vineyard; and his seven grandsons, Robert Correia Jr. of Brockton, Malik Correia of New London, Connecticut, and Takai Correia, Leon Correia Jr., Mason Correia, Jeffrey Correia Jr., and Latrell Correia, all of New Bedford.

Steven also leaves behind two beloved great-granddaughters, Nova and Àvon Jones of Lakeville, all his “grands” brought tremendous joy to his life.

He is also survived by his seven sisters: Ruth Howard and her husband, Ronald, of Sharon, Massachusetts; Henrietta Owens of Boston; Myrtice R. Williams-Caban, widow of the late Charles Caban, of New Bedford; Mattie K. Christian-Wood and her husband, Steven, of New Bedford; Valerie Williams-Parker of Norwich, Connecticut; Kim Williams-Rozario and her husband, Paul, of New Bedford; and Tanya Williams-Pediford and her husband, Winsor, of Baltimore, Maryland.

He is also survived by his three brothers: Eric Williams of South Carolina; Joseph Williams and his wife, Michelle, of New Bedford; and Timothy Williams and his wife, Julie, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, along with countless extended family members .“Uncle Steve” held a special place in the hearts of many, and the memories, laughter, and love he shared with them.

Steven was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert Correia of New Bedford; his parents, George and Lealer Williams; and his sisters, Delsia Bell-Robinson (Lawrence),and Lucinda Meyers-Wilson.

Steven will be remembered as a hardworking man, a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His love was shown through the things he did every day—providing for his family, showing up when they needed him, cooking for the people he loved, making them laugh, and simply enjoying life.

His presence will be deeply missed, but the love, lessons, laughter, and memories he leaves behind will remain with his family forever.

In honor of Steven Douglas Williams, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. 🕊️
